Jeez. This song chokes me up like crazy. I don’t expect this version to be any easier. But what a goddamn good song. Isbell is a hell of a talent.
Sort of on topic- I can’t remember which lizard mentioned the little 1 watt Marshall, but I mentioned it to my wife and she said what I assume every wife says when new gear is mentioned. “You should just get one.” So I did, and I love it a bunch. The sounds of screaming tubes with no accompanying eviction notice!
So a belated thank you to whoever posted about it. (Not too surprisingly, a Seymour Duncan P-rail bridge pickup sounds quite nice through it.)
So, just to recap, wingnuts have compared the following acts to the Gestapo:
- The early-morning raid of Paul Manafort’s home, which turned up documents that he had attempted to hide from federal investigators and likely would have destroyed had he been given prior notice.
- The raid of Michael Cohen’s office, again turning up documentation that he was attempting to shield from investigators, most of which did not fall under “attorney-client privilege” as he and Trump contested.
- The early-morning arrest of Roger Stone and seizure of electronic devices. No word yet on whether anything of value has been acquired, but considering Mueller’s track record to date, odds are they found a lot of data that Stone either tried to hide or thought he’d successfully destroyed.
By contrast, what did wingnuts think was a total disgrace to law enforcement and a failure by the FBI?
- Allowing Hillary Clinton to surrender her email server and consult an outside law firm to go through the documents on said server before turning them over, rather than having the FBI kick down the door and seize the server at gunpoint.

That little fart’s real God is Ayn Rand.
For those who want a précis of his book Utopia for Realists, here’s Rutger Bretman’s opinion piece in The Guardian. He’s the historian who told off the bigwigs at Davos a few days ago.
theguardian.com
No, wealth isn’t created at the top. It is merely devoured there
Rutger Bregmanexcerpt:
So entrenched is this assumption that it’s even embedded in our language. When economists talk about “productivity”, what they really mean is the size of your paycheck. And when we use terms like “welfare state”, “redistribution” and “solidarity”, we’re implicitly subscribing to the view that there are two strata: the makers and the takers, the producers and the couch potatoes, the hardworking citizens - and everybody else.In reality, it is precisely the other way around. In reality, it is the waste collectors, the nurses, and the cleaners whose shoulders are supporting the apex of the pyramid. They are the true mechanism of social solidarity. Meanwhile, a growing share of those we hail as “successful” and “innovative” are earning their wealth at the expense of others. The people getting the biggest handouts are not down around the bottom, but at the very top. Yet their perilous dependence on others goes unseen. Almost no one talks about it. Even for politicians on the left, it’s a non-issue.
To understand why, we need to recognise that there are two ways of making money. The first is what most of us do: work. That means tapping into our knowledge and know-how (our “human capital” in economic terms) to create something new, whether that’s a takeout app, a wedding cake, a stylish updo, or a perfectly poured pint. To work is to create. Ergo, to work is to create new wealth.
But there is also a second way to make money. That’s the rentier way: by leveraging control over something that already exists, such as land, knowledge, or money, to increase your wealth. You produce nothing, yet profit nonetheless. By definition, the rentier makes his living at others’ expense, using his power to claim economic benefit.
He characterizes Facebook, Google, Uber, Airbnb and others as modern-day rentiers, who are every bit as guilty of living off the hard work of others as landlords and investment bankers. Like Piketty, he warns against the increasing divide between haves and have-nots worldwide, and reminds the haves what eventually happens when the have-nots get fed up.
Worth a read. I’ve got his book in my Kindle queue, and plan to read it once I finish Liu Cixin’s Three Body Problem trilogy.

Tim Cook is pissed:
Apple says it’s banning Facebook’s research app that collects users’ personal information
…Apple’s response, via a PR rep this morning: “We designed our Enterprise Developer Program solely for the internal distribution of apps within an organization. Facebook has been using their membership to distribute a data-collecting app to consumers, which is a clear breach of their agreement with Apple. Any developer using their enterprise certificates to distribute apps to consumers will have their certificates revoked, which is what we did in this case to protect our users and their data.”
Translation: Apple won’t let Facebook distribute the app anymore — a fact that Apple likely communicated to Facebook on Tuesday evening. Apple’s statement also mentions that Facebook’s “certificates” — plural — have been revoked. That implies Facebook cannot distribute other apps to employees through this developer program right now, not just the research app….

There’s gonna be a whole lot of farmers dealing with major debts, if not bankruptcy proceedings, before year’s end when they realize the trickle of money they got from the gov’t for “relief” would have been better spent on covering their debts than buying up storage bins/bags/silos for crops that will have rotted long before the market for them returns.

Oh, as a libertarian, I’m sure the brain-dead tart thinks that airports and airlines will pay to hire private contractors to cover the role of the TSA. You know, the same industry that has seen “budget” airlines plow thousands of passengers into the ground in the name of saving a buck are gonna rush to hire top-notch security companies to keep those same passengers safe.

An interesting article here - the retail apocalypse isn’t just happening in the US……it’s also happening in the UK, as online sales of common goods lead to physical store closures.
Can’t say I’m surprised, to be honest. I teach a few students that work at the shopping mall closest to me; they’re mall managers, and they’ve also noticed that online shopping is slowly but surely starting to come into play here in Czech Republic as well.
I’ve done online shopping plenty of times - the sad truth is that many products I’m searching for simply don’t exist here in Czech Republic, and I have little other choice but to buy them online. Also, cost is a factor; online prices are typically 30% to 40% cheaper than their brick-and-mortar competitors and many of these online shops now offer free shipping and returns.
Why go to the store when I can have it in a couple of days, or a couple of weeks at the most, and save myself some money to boot?
re: #127 Dr Lizardo
Hyper-specialization is allowing for an economy where the producer-to-consumer path by steps the middle man. While it is sad that people and local retailers lose their jobs, their jobs were part of a culture that itself has been rather short in the long span of human existence.
The spice traders of old were the ancestors of Amazon. Supplying the colder realms of Eurasia with plant products from the tropics, the retailers in ancient times were the earlier middle-men. But on the local economy, life existed on the farm, and the local villages bought from the farmers.
Even in more recent times… looking at probate records from the early 19th century I come across receipts and bills, often not from the local retailer, but from the local tradesman. For example, that a deceased person owed the miller, or the local carpenter. That was a direct link from the producer to the consumer.
Holy smokes, digging into the most troll-y sounding replies really takes you down a rabbit hole of inter-following paranoid accounts which seem to be feeding each other the usual round of (what used to be) fringe right conspiracy craziness. Exactly why we need this legislation.

Saw this brief satirical article on the British Intertubes:
MPs want May to explain Brexit deal slowly to EU
In dramatic scenes last night, Parliament voted for Theresa May to return to Brussels and repeat their offer loudly and slowly until the foreigners get it.
The EU has repeatedly rejected the proposals because they’re a bit slow and obviously didn’t understand them the first time, but senior figures within parliament are confident that loudly saying ‘SPEAKEE ENGLISHEE’ will break the deadlock.
“The first time we explained the deal we’re after, Michel Barnier just cupped one ear and said ‘Que?’, so we think there’s room for movement there,” said MP Simon Williams.
“All Theresa May has to do to make Parliament happy is get the deal we have been specifically told isn’t on the table - and she can do that by raising her voice and enunciating ev-er-y syl-lab-ble. Like that,” he added.
“If I were Prime Minister I would have done it by now. It would have been dead easy, but I know how to talk to foreigners as I holiday in the Peloponnese every year.”
Theresa May is to return to Brussels this morning with a dead and empty expression behind her eyes.
LOL. It’s from Newsthump, which is sort of a Brit version of The Onion.
Yesterday’s big science news was the publishing of a couple of papers in Nature, in regards to Denisova cave:
Timing of archaic hominin occupation of Denisova Cave in southern Siberia
Age estimates for hominin fossils and the onset of the Upper Palaeolithic at Denisova Cave
Nature also included a summary article:
Ancient-human species mingled in Siberia’s hottest property for 300,000 years
Neanderthals and Denisovans might have lived side by side for tens of thousands of years, scientists report in two papers in Nature1,2.
The long-awaited studies are based on the analysis of bones, artefacts and sediments from Denisova Cave in southern Siberia, which is dotted with ancient-human remains. They provide the first detailed history of the site’s 300,000-year occupation by different groups of ancient humans.
[…]
The researchers cannot find out precisely when the groups lived together, or whether they ever shared the cave. But the existence of the hybrid individual — who lived around 100,000 years ago — means that the groups must have lived close enough to each other to meet at that time. Furthermore, Denny’s father harboured a sliver of Neanderthal ancestry, suggesting that his ancestors had previously interbred with Neanderthals.
[…]
Homo sapiens might also have lived in the cave, the researchers suggest. Bone pendants and tools — similar to those made by early modern humans in Europe — from the cave’s younger layers date to between 49,000 and 43,000 years old, reports a team led by archaeologists Katerina Douka at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Jena, Germany, and Tom Higham at the University of Oxford, UK, in the second Nature paper2.
The researchers dated one hominin bone to around 46,000-50,000 years ago, but could not retrieve any DNA to investigate which species it belonged to.
No other H. sapiens remains from this period, known as the Initial Upper Palaeolithic, have been found in Denisova cave or the wider Altai region. For this reason, the Russian archaeologists who spearhead the site’s excavation have argued that Denisovans made the artefacts, which are more sophisticated than the site’s older stone tools. But Higham would like to see more proof before linking the artefacts to any group. “It’s possible Denisovans could have made the Upper Palaeolithic. It’s possible the Russians are right. At the moment, with the evidence we have, we can’t really be sure,” he says.
[…]
Some of the artifacts appear to be jewelry. The CNN article has an image:
This cave sheltered some of the first known humans 300,000 years ago
Whether or not it was the Denisovans who made the artefacts will be debated until hard evidence can be found of H. sapien occupying the cave at an early date.

Buy a lottery ticket every week until you retire. If you haven’t won by then, buy a gun and knock over a bank. Even if you get caught, you have a roof over your head, warm meals and health care for the rest of your life.
Seems some people are really doing that;
Why some Japanese pensioners want to go to jail
” I reached pension age and then I ran out of money. So it occurred to me - perhaps I could live for free if I lived in jail,” he says.
“So I took a bicycle and rode it to the police station and told the guy there: ‘Look, I took this.’”
The plan worked. This was Toshio’s first offence, committed when he was 62, but Japanese courts treat petty theft seriously, so it was enough to get him a one-year sentence.”

I think the problem with our society is we get amnesia too easily. Certainly that helped Bush’s rise in 2000 or the Republican “Revoluton” in 1994 or the Tea Party rise in 2010 and later Trump in 2016. The past gets overglamorized by people who never had to live it or if they did live have an agenda in wanting to ignore the worst parts of it. TBH I’m optimistic about defeating Trump next fall. But where I’m more uncertain is preventing this from happening again. The next Democratic president is going to have their hands full. And note to progressives, we’re not going to get all we want done. Some things may not be accomplished. That doesn’t mean we sit on our hands in 2024 and 2028 and let a right wing asshole take advantage of disappointment and give us something worse. Would a President Clinton have solved our societal problems as of right now? No but she would be addressing them in a way Trump certainly isn’t doing.

Greets and saluts from the frozen tundra of the NYC metro area. It’s frickin cold here, but Mount Washington is laughing at all of us complaining. They’re currently experiencing near hurricane force winds and a wind chill of -79 degrees. Air temp is -25.9 with no wind there.
That’s nuts.
What’s also nuts is trying to fight fires in this weather. The fire at the Marcal factory that began last night continues today, and ended up burning down the entire factory - multiple buildings totally gone. I doubt the parent company will rebuild. 200+ people are likely out of a job. There’s another big fire in Brooklyn that is still not under control, and then there was a fire at Newark Airport that burned a bunch of cars on the roof of the parking garage.
But you know what’s bugnuts insane? Trump and his insistence on building a wall, and then tweeting nonsense about how he’s already building a wall, and the cognitive dissonance from all his wall-related tweets, because he’s lying throughout, and wants people to think he’s building a wall, that a wall isn’t built, that we need a wall, that a wall works, and that if we don’t we’ll see high crime.
All of these are demonstrably untrue. Crime is at or near historic lows across the US. Border cities actually are at low crime levels. Walls aren’t stopping visa overstays, which are the main reason people are here illegally (and companies like Trump’s hire undocumented persons because they’re cheaper than getting Americans to do the jobs).
The reality is that Trump’s wall is to keep nonwhites out. His immigration policy is predicated on it. His policies are about preventing nonwhites from seeking asylum. He doesn’t want nonwhites coming here. And his bigot base cheers it on.

Just a thought on Schultz: We should talk about the other Democratic candidates instead. Right in those twitter threads. We should set the bar at what we expect out of a Democrat, and force candidates to clear it.
I’m not on Twitter as you know but I expect: knowledge of the issues, ideas not platitudes, leadership and delegation skills, & philosophically the belief that government can be a positive force in people’s economic lives.

For Wendel, who was arguing the other day that what Russia was doing was not illegal. War has a totally different set of definitions than legality, and this is what war looks like:
The workers at the IRA created dozens of Facebook accounts, Twitter accounts, webpages, and a network of connections among them. Then they created thousands of bots, each of which had its own set of accounts and provided apparent heft and popularity to the core accounts. They even sent actual Russian agents to actual American cities to stage actual protests. On Twitter alone, the IRA created 3,800 known accounts and sent 176,000 tweets that were seen by millions of Americans. Some of those tweets were retweeted by such conservative Trump supporters as Ann Coulter. Some of them were retweeted by members of Trump’s campaign, like Michael Flynn. The YouTube videos the IRA created also got broad notice on the right. So did their GIF memes. And when they had trouble getting an idea to break through organically, the Russians did it the old-fashioned way: They bought ads. All of it as part of the effort to help Donald Trump. At least 90 people worked full-time at this effort—and that doesn’t include the “over 100 Americans” that they either recruited or attempted to recruit.
On Wednesday, the special counsel’s office made a new court filing opposing the publication of some documents related to the Concord case. And, as CNN reports, the filing reveals that Concord Management has already been busy conducting its own document release—against court orders. And the Russians have been making changes to the documents they release. The new filing states that “Certain non-sensitive discovery materials in the defense’s possession appear to have been altered and disseminated as part of a disinformation campaign aimed (apparently) at discrediting ongoing investigations into Russian interference in the U.S. political system.”

Because people did something insanely stupid before doesn’t mean it was good, let alone right.
We used to have people working in deathtrap buildings with locked doors and no fire protection. Hey, it meant the owners could maximize their profits, and who cared if there were deadly fires occasionally. They could always find more little kids to work the line.
We used to have kids working in clothing mills, because they could fit their tiny hands in the looms and get the bobbins in and out. Who cared if they lost limbs when they weren’t fast enough. They weren’t fast enough. That’s on them. But losing fingers meant that they learned valuable life lessons and toughened them up.

Personally speaking, if I had the power to do it, I’d close down those organizations and deport the lot of them and make them all persona non grata in the USA. I’d also consider tit-for-tat reprisals against Russia.
As it is, our Senate and our White House are compromised, so nothing is going to happen until Trump is out of office.

Hey, guess what? Trump and Rick Perry were shipping Plutonium to Nevada without telling the state:
The Department Of Energy, led by noted expert Rick Perry, secretly shipped half a ton of “weapons-grade” plutonium to a site 90 miles from Las Vegas. The shipments came despite decades of objections from state officials, and over concerns of both environmental groups and scientists.
As The Hill reports, information on the shipments only became public because Nevada sued to stop what the state thought were still only plans to ship material from South Carolina. But in court, officials learned that some time before November 2018, Trump and Perry had already delivered a gift of 1,000 pounds of element Pu. The dates, means of delivery, and route the plutonium took in crossing the country are still secret.
Driving up the anger-counter is the fact that the DOE was continuing to pretend to negotiate with the state of Nevada as if the shipments were still upcoming. While the state government raised objections and thought it was negotiating over how any shipments might be conducted safely, behind the scenes the plutonium was already arriving. As the state’s Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak made clear, “They lied to the State of Nevada, misled a federal court, and jeopardized the safety of Nevada’s families and environment.” Sisolak declared himself “beyond outraged” by the DOE’s action.

The state should sue the fuck out of Trump and DOE and Perry, and hold them accountable. They put millions of lives at risk by moving around weapons grade nuclear materials (that’s what plutonium is and used for), and any accidental release can put people at risk. Knowing how Trumpworld operates, those risks go up exponentially.

The lying and breach of public trust is a very big deal. The plutonium itself, not so much. My whole generation of Americans grew up with plutonium in our backyards or 30,000 ft overhead.
re: #319 HappyWarrior
And there we go. Perry’s DOE had been quiet till now. Hope Nevada sues the assholes.
Not just Nevada, but every state through which the plutonium traveled.
There’s still 1,000 pounds of plutonium that still needs to be shipped. It’s not getting to Nevada without going through other states.
I get need to transfer the material, but how it is transferred and how to do it safely are a real concern. It’s the same concerns that were in place on dealing with decommissioning nuclear reactors, taking spent fuel, and getting it to Yucca Mt (which was supposed to be the national nuclear waste repository).

Well, apparently, they actually DID “get away with it” - one presumes any spill/leakage of weapons-grade plutonium might have generated some publicity.
And given the general level of governmental competence characteristic of the Trump Administration, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Sec’y Rick “Glasses-make-me-look-smarter” Perry, or one of his minions, use the reveal to dismiss concerns about the handling/transport of radioactive materials as the uninformed bleating of Luddite hippie tree—huggers…..

Nuclear Arms race incoming…
“The Trump administration will stop abiding by a landmark arms control pact with Russia as soon as Saturday after last-minute diplomatic efforts to bring Moscow back into compliance failed, a top State Department official told Reuters.
“We’ll have an announcement made, follow all the steps that need to be taken on the treaty to suspend our obligations with the intent to withdraw,” Andrea Thompson, under secretary of State for arms control and international security, told the publication in an interview Thursday.
Thompson’s remarks followed talks with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov in Beijing, where Thompson is leading the U.S. delegation at the 2019 P5 Conference.
The U.S. has publicly accused Russia of violating the Soviet-era Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) since 2014, which Moscow denies. President Trump signaled in October that he planned to withdraw from the treaty, citing Russia’s failure to comply.
The pact was signed in 1987 by then-President Reagan and Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev. It bans all land-based missiles with short and intermediate ranges.
On Dec. 4, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave Russia 60 days to comply with the treaty, setting a Feb. 2 deadline before the U.S. would vacate its commitments under the agreement unless Russia came back into compliance.
The process to formally withdraw from the treaty takes six months, but the U.S. plans to stop complying with it as soon as this weekend, Thompson said.
She said the Pentagon would be able to begin developing longer-range missiles if it so chooses.”

Just a thought on Schultz: We should talk about the other Democratic candidates instead. Right in those twitter threads. We should set the bar at what we expect out of a Democrat, and force candidates to clear it.
Just a note on Schultz. He denies the Democrats now. He has said he has run away from the party because they are too extreme right now. So he shouldn’t even be mentioned with the Democrats. Hopefully in not too long a time no one will be mentioning him.

Bevin v. Davis
Both of them should go pound sand for all the damage they’re doing.
This was probably the nuclear weapon accident that occurred in the most densely populated US area:
The facility, one of eight located around the country, east of Route 539 in Plumstead Township, N.J., was operated by the Air Force from 1959 until 1972.
On June 7, 1960, a fire destroyed a nuclear warhead-equipped missile in shelter 204 at the BOMARC facility. The accident released plutonium (radioactive material) into the environment. Heat from the fire and fire suppression activities facilitated dispersion of plutonium over a 7-acre area.
It was scary and very expensive, but it was contained.

Nolan’s Batman trilogy are pretty big shoes to fill, if we’re gonna be honest.
Sure - let’s say some crime, or a series of crimes, occurs….something truly awful. It’s up to Batman to not only solve the crime and bring the perp to justice, but prevent the perp from carrying out some kind of pièce de résistance, some horrific masterpiece of crime.
Let’s see Batman tracking the perp down, discovering their identity; let’s see his methodology. Elements of police procedural with some action thrown in to keep the fans happy too.

Fair enough.
When I’m thinking police procedural, David Fincher’s Zodiac is what immediately springs to mind. Now granted, the Zodiac case is still open, which is why the film ends where it does (and it’s noted that Arthur Leigh Allen has, for the most part, been effectively ruled out), but that was a fantastic, top-notch police procedural.
You’ll need more action for a Batman film, naturally.

There was an outside chance that this could have happened during watergate. Agnew had resigned, and Nixon was facing impeachment. If he wouldn’t have nominated Ford, and had he held out on resigning, we could have had it play out that way. But Nixon, for his many faults, was at his core a patriot and recognized that it playing out like hat would have been terrible for the country

UK Brexiteers are their version of our Trumpers:
It’s time to give the EU an ultimatum on Brexit
Theresa May should stop kowtowing to the EU and take control of these negotiations. Be strong and proud of what we have in the UK, step up and use that intransigence and determination for a different direction. Go to the EU and state what we will accept - and if we don’t get that, walk away and go full tilt for a no deal. It will cost another load of millions, but how much has it cost already, not in just money, but with the extended squabbling and game playing in the Commons? The plight of the less able and the country have been ignored for too long.
If the EU does come back with any offers that are short of our demands, reject them until the last moment. If the last offer is acceptable, take it; if not, carry on. The country badly needs a leader not a follower.

Giant Void Hidden Under Antarctica’s Ice Threatens Vast Glacier
There’s a giant void hiding under the Antarctic ice, and it’s growing larger and more menacing by the day, a new study using satellite data finds.
The cavity is colossal, about two-thirds the area of Manhattan and nearly 1,000 feet (300 meters) tall. It’s growing at the bottom of Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica, and it’s rapidly enabling ice melt above it.
[…]
Scientists spotted the concealed void thanks to a new generation of satellites, Rignot noted. These satellites, which are part of NASA’s Operation IceBridge, have ice-penetrating radar. The researchers also used data from a constellation of Italian and German spacecraft that are equipped with an SAR (synthetic-aperture radar) instrument that can measure how ground surface has shifted between images.
These tools revealed that the ground had shifted substantially from 1992 to 2017, the scientists found.

Batman Beyond was hat story. Old Bruce Wayne brings in a young guy to be Batman and assumes the Alfred role. They’ve also had versions where Bruce Wayne disappears and Nightwing becomes Batman
I’d like something where they just pick up with Nightwing, Red Robin, and Red Hood (along with Batgirl and Batwoman) all running about and Damien Wayne is Robin. Those stories can be interesting

Why we elect Democrats:
Leading Democrats have introduced legislation that would put the victims of the Trump administration’s barbaric “zero tolerance” policy on a path to legal status and eventual U.S. citizenship. “While the trauma of this policy will leave a lasting impact on those affected,” Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas said, “the Families Belong Together Act seeks to bring a modicum of justice by helping parents and children.”
Over 2,500 children were stolen from families at the southern border under the policy, which a federal judge halted last summer. But a recent government watchdog report found that the Trump administration stole thousands more kids than previously reported. “How many more children were separated is unknown by us and Health and Human Services,” an investigator said.
“Given the latest report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Inspector General that said thousands more were separated than previously known,” Castro continued, “we must hold this administration accountable for rectifying this tragedy that will inevitably leave a dark stain on America’s history.”

I agree Pence doesn’t resign unless they’ve got him dead to rites. Even then, the Senate Republicans may vote to acquit him (while convicting/removing Trump), so that Pence becomes president. He’d be a historically weak president, having already been impeached, and would likely be a lame duck as soon as he took office (every GOP Senator and Governor declares for 2020 the day the vote to remove comes down).
But let’s say he does resign. Yes, Trump gets to appoint a new VP. But that VP must be confirmed by both Houses of Congress. So, if he reneges on some agreeable grand bargain nominee; the House can take it up, and vote against confirmation. In that case, it doesn’t matter what the Senate does or doesn’t do (could McConnell try and speed the nomination through the Senate on a party line vote? Yes, he could, but given the nature of the appointment, I’m not sure how many Republicans would be on board with that). If Trump doesn’t nominate someone that can get through both chambers, and he is indeed impeached/removed, then the presidency transfers to Pelosi.
It’s an absolute nightmare and constitutional crisis the likes we’ve never really seen. And so far outside of normal that nobody has really considered it except in the most fantastical novels/TV shows.

The recent “SpiderMan: Into the SpiderVerse” seems to have sort of gone that direction; at least it’s opening up the idea that SpiderMan doesn’t have to be Peter Parker.
